Specifications

The 20 yard at a glance

Dimensions

22 ft long × 7.5 ft wide × 4.5 ft high

Capacity

20 cubic yards — about 6 pickup truck loads

Weight included

3–4 tons in the flat rate

Driveway space needed

About 25 ft long × 10 ft wide, plus door swing

Standard rental runs 7 days on every size, and debris needs to stay below the container's top rail so the driver can haul it safely — that applies whether it lands on a driveway or, with a City of Lancaster right-of-way permit through the Bureau of Engineering, a public street.

Is this the one?

When the 20 yard is the right call

If we could keep only one container size, this would be it. At 22 feet long by 7.5 feet wide by 4.5 feet high it holds roughly six pickup truck loads with a 3–4 ton allowance built for genuinely mixed debris, and it still fits on a normal single-family driveway across Lancaster and Lancaster County — the more open lots out toward Willow Street or East Petersburg give it plenty of room, and it still works on most Downtown or College Park properties too. It is also, alongside the 10 yard, the size we point roofing jobs toward — the weight allowance and the length both suit a full tear-off better than anything else on the list.

It is also the right call on a lot of jobs where people reach for a 30. Flooring, siding, drywall and finish debris from a remodel, a larger roof tear-off, or a bigger yard-waste cleanup all fill a 20's weight allowance before they fill a 30's volume — and a larger separated yard-waste load benefits from the same clean-load logic as the 15, given Pennsylvania's ban on landfilling leaf waste. Just remember concrete, dirt, brick and tile still belong in a 10 or a 15 — mixing heavy material into a 20 yard load is the fastest way to run over the included weight, and everything still needs to stay below the top rail. A whole-home cleanout is also a common place for old electronics to turn up; those go to certified e-waste recycling under Pennsylvania's Covered Device Recycling Act, not into the container.

Straight advice: The one to default to when you are genuinely unsure. It is rarely the wrong answer for a remodel or a roof — just keep concrete, dirt, brick and tile out of it and route that to a 10 or 15 instead, keep electronics out entirely, and keep everything below the top rail.

Ideal for

  • Whole-home cleanouts
  • Flooring and siding replacement
  • Roofing tear-offs — the 20 pairs with the 10 as the two sizes built for the job
  • Drywall and general remodel debris
  • Larger yard waste and landscaping cleanups, kept separate under PA's landfill ban on leaf waste
  • Most Lancaster-area driveways without crowding the garage
  • The default when a job description does not clearly point to a 10, 15 or 30

How it sizes up against the others

Same flat pricing model across all five. The real question is which weight allowance matches your material — heavy debris, roofing, or a construction phase.

Answers

20 Yard Dumpster questions

What are the dimensions of a 20 yard dumpster?

About 22 ft long by 7.5 ft wide by 4.5 ft high. Allow roughly 25 ft of clear driveway length plus about 10 ft of width so the rear doors can swing open.

Is a 20 yard dumpster right for a roofing job?

Often, yes — the 20 is one of the two sizes we point roofing jobs toward, alongside the 10. It suits a fuller tear-off or a two-layer roof better than a 10, where the shingle weight would use up a smaller allowance fast.

Can I put concrete, dirt, brick or tile in a 20 yard dumpster?

It is not the right container for that. Heavy, dense material like concrete, dirt, brick and tile belongs in a 10 or a 15. If a job has both remodel debris and a slab of concrete coming out, we will often pair a 20 with a 10 rather than try to fit it all in one box.

Do I need a permit for a 20 yard dumpster in my driveway?

No. Most 20 yard deliveries sit entirely on a private driveway with no permit needed. A permit only applies if the container has to sit on a public street or sidewalk, and inside the City of Lancaster that is a Bureau of Engineering right-of-way permit — surrounding townships run their own process if the job is outside the city.
